Peter Kabethi

PWDs Independent Living Advisor

Peter serves as the PWDs Independent Living Advisor at the Deaf Empowerment Society of Kenya (DESK). A dedicated and goal-driven professional educator, Peter brings over 13 years of experience in tutoring Deaf learners at both primary and high school levels, combined with a deep commitment to the social and academic growth of every child.
Expertise in Special Education & Assessment
Peter’s advisory role is grounded in a robust academic foundation, making him a leading voice in Inclusive Education and assessment:
  • Master of Education (M.Ed.): Majoring in Educational Assessment, Measurement, and Evaluation from Aga Khan University.
  • Bachelor of Special Education: From Mount Kenya University.
  • Diploma in Special Education: From the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE).
Advocacy & Independent Living
Beyond the classroom, Peter is a seasoned leader in advocacy and outreach. At DESK, he focuses on ensuring that the Deaf and Hard of Hearing are recognized by society and prioritized for funding by government and donor agencies. His core responsibilities include:
  • Independent Living Skills Training: Empowering Deaf individuals with the practical skills needed to lead autonomous, self-reliant lives.
  • Information & Referrals: Providing beneficiaries with critical links to education, health, and social services.
  • Guidance for Families: Offering professional support and guidance to PWDs and their families to navigate the challenges of disability inclusion.
  • Community Outreach: Leading nationwide initiatives to promote disability awareness and ensure the rights of the Deaf are upheld in every community.

Peter’s unique combination of pedagogical expertise and grassroots advocacy ensures that the Deaf Empowerment Society of Kenya delivers holistic support. His work bridges the gap between academic learning and real-world independence, ensuring that Deaf Kenyans in 2026 have the tools to live with dignity and purpose.
