DESK programs are designed with a Human Rights Approach aimed at eliminating the disability barriers in our communities. We affirm that all human beings, irrespective of disabilities, possess equal and inalienable rights. Our work is grounded in the Constitution of Kenya and the Persons with Disabilities Act, which serve as the foundation for our pursuit of social justice.

Empowering Self-Advocates

Our core human rights intervention is centered on empowerment. We believe that the strongest voice for the community is the community itself. To achieve this, we provide:

  • Human Rights Training: Specialized workshops that equip the Deaf and Hard of Hearing with a deep understanding of their legal protections.
  • Information Sharing: Breaking down complex laws and policies into accessible Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) and plain language formats.
  • Self-Advocacy: Mentoring individuals to become bold self-advocates who can independently navigate and challenge systems of discrimination.

Institutional Capacity Building

Beyond individual empowerment, DESK works to build the capacity of key institutions engaged in the implementation of the law. We provide technical expertise to the judiciary, law enforcement, and government bodies to enhance the enforcement of the rights of the Deaf. By ensuring duty-bearers are fully equipped to manage the needs of our community, we bridge the gap between legal theory and the daily reality of Deaf Kenyans.
